Breed Overview

The Papillon is a small, toy breed of dog. Originating in Europe in the 14th century, it is characterized by its generally good temperament, long silky fur, bold spirit, and butterfly-like ears. Papillon is a French word meaning "butterfly" and refers to the breed's distinctive upright ears, which are fringed with feathery hair and resemble a butterfly's wings.

Care and Grooming

Papillons require regular brushing to keep their coats free of knots and tangles. They should be bathed every 2-4 weeks. The breed is naturally active and requires regular exercise in the form of walks or play. They must also be given mental stimulation in the form of toys and games. Though they can tolerate cold weather, they should not be left outside in extreme heat.

Training and Socialization

Papillons are intelligent and fairly easy to train. They should be taught basic obedience from an early age. Socialization is an important part of owning a Papillon; from a young age, they should be exposed to a variety of people and situations. Proper socialization can help prevent fear-based aggression and other behavioral problems.

Health and Wellness

Papillons are generally a healthy breed with few inherited health issues. However, they can be prone to eye problems and luxating patella (a condition where the kneecap slips out of its normal groove). Regular health screenings with a vet are recommended in order to detect and treat any potential health issues early.

Living Environment

Papillons are well-suited for apartment living. They are usually content to spend quiet time relaxing indoors during the day if they have been given sufficient exercise and playtime. They typically don't need a yard to burn off energy, but they do enjoy leisurely outdoor walks. Papillons must spend time indoors as they are sensitive to cold weather.

Temperament and Personality

The Papillon is an affectionate, cheerful breed. They are loyal to their owners and bond strongly with their families. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. Papillons generally get along well with people and are good with children. They may be distrustful of strangers, however, due to their small size and high energy levels.

Common Challenges

Papillons may exhibit the small-dog syndrome, exhibiting overly-aggressive behavior due to lack of discipline and lack of proper socialization. Additionally, this breed is known to suffer from separation anxiety and be vocal in their unhappiness when left alone. Papillons must receive regular training and exercise to lead a happy, healthy life.
