Maltese: Overview

The Maltese is a small, sturdy little dog that originated in the Mediterranean and has been around for thousands of years. These lively little dogs stand between seven and nine inches tall and weigh between five and eight pounds when fully grown, making them perfect for living in small spaces. Maltese are glamorous looking dogs that are covered in a long, silky, white coat with no visible shedding.

Care and Grooming

Maltese are relatively easy to groom. It is recommended to brush your Maltese's coat regularly to help remove tangles and prevent matting. They should also be bathed with special shampoo and conditioner for their coat type, as well as trimmed up slightly every three weeks or so to keep their coat neat and tidy. In addition to regular grooming, Maltese should have their nails clipped and ears checked for wax or dirt buildup.

Maltese are smart and eager to please, making them an excellent choice for those looking for a compatible and responsive pup. Positive reinforcement with treats and pleasant tones should be used when teaching commands and providing praise. Early socialization with people and other animals is highly recommended to ensure that your Maltese is comfortable in all situations throughout life.

Health and Wellness

Maltese have generally good health, but there are some concerns to look out for. They should have regular health checkups with your veterinarian to make sure that their basic needs are being met. Issues such as dental disease, ear infections, and eye problems should be monitored. Additionally, Maltese may be prone to patellar luxation, a condition where the knee joint pops out of place, and should be monitored by a professional.

Living Environment

Maltese are well-suited for apartment life. They require regular walks and playtime but they do not require a large backyard or other outdoor accommodations. They tend to be more sensitive to extreme temperatures, so they should be kept inside during the winter months and in the shade during hot summer days.

Maltese have big personalities in their small frames. They are playful and energetic, and enjoy spending time with their family. They are also independent and can become attached to their owners. Maltese have a big bark and are excellent watchdogs, despite their size.
